Keep Your Doll in Perfect Condition
Proper care extends the life of your doll significantly and keeps it looking and feeling its best. Follow this guide to protect your investment.
1. Cleaning Your Doll
General Cleaning (After Every Use)
Use warm water and a mild antibacterial soap. Use a soft cloth or sponge — never abrasive materials. Pat dry thoroughly with a clean towel and allow to air dry completely before storage.
Cleaning TPE Dolls
TPE is porous so thorough cleaning is important. Use warm water and mild antibacterial soap. Avoid soaking or submerging the doll. After cleaning, dry completely — any moisture left in the skin can cause odour or mould over time.
Cleaning Silicone Dolls
Silicone is non-porous and easier to clean. Use warm water and mild soap. Silicone can tolerate slightly more thorough rinsing than TPE. Dry thoroughly after cleaning.
What to Avoid: Alcohol-based products, bleach, harsh chemicals, abrasive cloths, and submerging the doll completely in water. These damage both TPE and silicone.
2. Skin Care & Maintenance
Talc / Baby Powder — TPE Only
After your TPE doll is fully dry, apply a light dusting of talcum powder or cornstarch. This absorbs residual moisture, reduces stickiness and keeps the skin feeling soft and smooth. Do not use talc on silicone — it is not necessary and can affect the surface finish.
Moisturising TPE Skin
Over time TPE skin can dry out. Apply a small amount of TPE renewal oil or mineral oil periodically to keep the skin supple and prevent cracking. Do this every few weeks depending on use.
Silicone Skin Care
Silicone does not require oiling or powder. It is naturally non-porous and low maintenance. Simply keep it clean and dry.
3. Wig Care
Removing & Washing the Wig
Always remove the wig before cleaning the doll. Wash wigs separately in cool water with a small amount of wig shampoo or mild conditioner. Gently work through the fibres — do not scrub or wring.
Drying & Brushing
Allow the wig to air dry on a wig stand. Once dry, use a wide-tooth comb or wig brush — start from the ends and work upward to avoid pulling and tangling.
Storage
Store wigs on a wig stand or in a breathable bag away from direct sunlight and heat. Avoid crushing or compressing the wig during storage.
4. Posing & Joint Care
Avoid Sustained Contorted Poses
Never leave your doll in a stressed, contorted or extreme position for extended periods. This puts ongoing pressure on joints, skin and the internal skeleton, leading to premature wear and tearing.
Safe Resting Positions
The safest resting position is flat on the back with limbs in a natural, relaxed position. Avoid leaving joints at maximum flex or extension when storing.
Fingers & Toes
Fingers and toes are the most fragile parts of the skeleton. Avoid applying force or bending them beyond their natural range. Handle with care when dressing or posing.
5. Storage
Laying Flat vs Hanging
Laying flat is the most common and safest storage method — use a soft surface to avoid pressure marks. Hanging via a suspension hook (if your doll supports it) keeps limbs relaxed and avoids flat spots but requires a dedicated hook system.
Environment
Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. UV exposure degrades both TPE and silicone over time. Avoid high humidity environments.
Clothing & Colour Transfer
TPE is porous and absorbs dye from dark clothing. Always use light-coloured or white clothing for long-term storage. Wash any new clothing before dressing your doll. Silicone is more resistant to colour transfer but the same precaution is recommended.
Storage Tip: The original packaging box works well for storage. If unavailable, a large breathable storage bag or a dedicated doll carry case are good alternatives.
6. Long Term Care & Repairs
Repairing Minor Tears — TPE
Minor surface tears on TPE dolls can often be repaired at home using a TPE repair kit. Apply a small amount of TPE glue to the tear, press firmly and allow to cure fully before use. For larger tears contact SDA for advice.
Repairing Minor Tears — Silicone
Silicone repairs require a silicone-specific adhesive or patch kit — standard TPE glue will not bond correctly on silicone. For small surface tears, apply silicone adhesive carefully and allow full cure time. For larger or deeper tears, professional repair is strongly recommended. Expected Lifespan
With proper care a quality doll can last many years. TPE typically has a lifespan of 2–5 years with regular use and proper maintenance. Silicone is more durable and can last longer with the same level of care.
